Carbon Finance
Access to Carbon Markets
The IDB, through Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative Investment Funds, actively supports countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in reaching their full potential in the carbon markets. We provide technical assistance to help the public and private sectors in the region to overcome existing barriers to access to carbon markets, build the necessary capacities and formulate long-term strategies that contribute to tackle climate change and the sustainable development.
The technical assistance encompasses three key areas:
Technical Assistance
We provide technical assistance for the identification and preparation of climate change mitigation projects aimed at the carbon markets, in particular projects under the Kyoto Protocol´s clean development mechanism (CDM). IDB´s support is available to public institutions and private companies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Capacity Building
IDB engages in capacity building with the objective of facilitating access to carbon markets in the region. We facilitate the exchange of knowledge and provide technical assistance with the vision of building the capacity necessary for effective engagement in carbon markets, especially in the CDM. One of our key initiatives in this area is the development of a carbon finance knowledge platform in Spanish.
Financial Institutions
We work together with public and private financial institutions to implement climate governance systems, develop innovative schemes and instruments to promote investment in emissions reductions projects and programs, and reduce their degree of exposure to the risks posed by climate change.
